Stornoway is a busy town and the largest settlement on the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland, it has one of the best natural sheltered harbours which open out into the North Minch. The name is thought to be Norse for ‘steering bay’ and dates back to 1100’s with Stornoway Castle, although completely destroyed in 1653 by Cromwell the remains were used in the foundation of the pier c1800. The harbour partially surrounds the town and is home to one of the principal ferry terminals of the Outer Hebrides with a roll-on-roll-off car-ferry link to Ullapool on the mainland. The airport operates flights externally with Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness and internally with Benbecula and Barra. Stornoway is a popular tourist resort with hotels, B&B’s, pubs, award-winning restaurants, cafes, and a range of shops, an18-hole golf course and sea-trout angling club. Interesting buildings include the Town House, The Town Hall which houses the Museum nan Eilean, St Peter’s Episcopal Church, 1839 and the 19th century Amity House. Attractions include the Art Centre, the Lewis Loom Centre with guided tours, spinning wheel demonstrations and history of the famous Harris Tweed and the 19th century Lews Castle College which hosts the annual Hebridean Celtic Festival in the grounds each July. As part of the culture of Lewis and Harris, Sunday Observance, means most shops, amenities and attractions are closed on Sundays.
