Cottisford is a hamlet and parish in the north-eastern corner of Oxfordshire, about six miles north of Bicester and four miles south of Brackley. It is part of Lark Rise country taken from the ‘Lark Rise to Candelford’ books by 19th century local girl Flora Thompson, the daughter of a stonemason of Juniper Hill. She was born in the hamlet in 1877 and educated at Cottisford village school. Cottisford appears as Fordlow in the books. The village of Cottisford lies on the banks of the Crowell stream, where there was once a ford. In the 19th century the comparatively new hamlet in the north-west of the parish at Juniper Hill developed, and Cottisford itself spread up the hill to the east. The Parish is not greatly changed since Flora’s time - about a dozen new houses have been built, but the population is still well under 200. The village church is St. Mary the Virgin, built in the 13th Century on the site of a Saxon Church. Apart from the removal of a tower it remains unchanged. Cottisford is only 15 minutes away from Silverstone motor racing circuit. The market town of Brackley has fine Georgian buildings and a huge antique centre. Nearby Bicester has the famous Bicester Village Shopping Centre.
