South Stoke is a small picturesque village which is set on the banks of the River Thames in the county of Oxfordshire. It has an intriguing history which dates as far back in time as the Saxon settlers who lived here and farmed the land, the invading Romans who built the Icknield Way nearby, and the Medieval Monks who lived here and kept their ancient fish ponds stocked up, the remains of which can still be found close by. A gentle walk around the lanes will unveil attractive cottages, stunning black and white timber framed houses, and an impressive 13th Century church dedicated to St Andrew which has 14th Century glass that has stood the test of time. There is a picturesque 17th Century Inn which continues to welcome visitors today, there are no shops but as Goring-on-Thames is only a mile or so away it's well placed. Walkers will be tempted to visit here as its surrounded by beautiful countryside which has a network of footpaths to explore, and the ancient Ridgeway Path which journeys through here, and, for those visitors and holidaymakers who wish to stay for a while there is a choice of places from an historic 17th Inn, comfortable B&B's, cottages and pleasant hotels close by.
