The picturesque heritage town of Clonakilty is known as "The Beach Centre of West Cork", due to its proximity to some of Ireland's most beautiful golden sands. Inchydoney Strand is especially popular since as well as its dunes, rocks and long beach, it's a prime surfing spot. Clonakilty is the perfect holiday destination for every type of seaside activity, from bird-watching and whale- and dolphin-spotting to sailing, swimming, fishing, kayaking and windsurfing, but it has plenty of attractions to suit every visitor. To stroll around its charming streets filled with colourfully painted buildings and floral displays is to chance upon a variety of fine restaurants, friendly pubs and fun-filled live traditional music sessions. Culture vultures will enjoy browsing the town's arts, crafts and photographic galleries, while outdoor types can take part in traditional sports such as golf, walking, cycling and riding, or more unusual enterprises - archery, for instance, or laser clay-pigeon shooting or war games. Sightseers should be sure not to miss the town's special attractions, notably the West Cork Model Railway Village, the Lios-na- gCon Ringfort, the statue of local patriot Michael Collins, and Twomey's butcher's shop, said to be the birthplace of the famous Clonakilty black pudding.
