Douglas is a thriving suburb of Cork city, and it has become very popular with visitors seeking a base for exploring the city - and the world-class scenery and wonderful attractions of the surrounding countryside. Situated just a couple of miles to the south-east of Cork city, Douglas was once a small village that produced textiles. Some of its biggest mills are still standing, although they were long ago converted for other business purposes, and many of the workers' small stone dwellings remain. At the other end of the scale, one or two of village's grand old mansions have also survived, notably Maryborough House, which has been transformed into a hotel and spa, set in 300-year-old gardens. Douglas is an attractive riverside town set among rolling fields, although in recent years, it has grown to accommodate more than one major shopping centre, a multiplex cinema, a broad variety of restaurants and large numbers of new houses. Golfers have a choice of two courses. Douglas Golf Club boasts a parkland course with plenty of trees and dramatic views to the distant Knockmealdown Mountains. Frankfield golf course is another parkland course, known for its hills. Set in the Lee Valley, it offers great views of Cork City.
