The market town of Kirkby in Ashfield lies in the central English county of Nottinghamshire. It is situated just to the southwest of Mansfield and is directly south of Sutton in Ashfield. It enjoys easy access to all parts of Britain due to its close proximity to the M1 motorway. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book but goes back some way before that as it was originally a Danish town; the name Kirkby comes from the Danish for 'church town'. There are currently two churches in Kirkby in Ashfield. St Wilfrid's Church is a Norman church, but was gutted by fire in 1907. It was, however, swiftly restored to its former glory. The other church, St Thomas', was built in 1910 in a neo-gothic style. Kirkby was once an important coal mining centre with three active mines in the area, all of which have now been closed for over 20 years. For the keen shopper, Kirkby in Ashfield has a thriving town centre with over 150 shops and businesses. The Lowmoore Inn, The Coxmoore Inn and the Duke of Wellington are amongst some of the pubs where you can find refreshment after you have sampled the uniquely independent shops on offer in the town centre.
