Dundalk - one of Ireland's largest towns - has a whole range of attractions to interest every member of the family, from sports to shopping, and beaches to indoor games and amusements, including ice- skating and tenpin bowling. This is a place where visitors may explore the past at museums, exhibitions, historic buildings and ancient sites (children can't resist throwing coins to make a wish at the Proleek dolmen) while also enjoying the best in contemporary restaurants, bars and entertainments, arts and crafts. Situated close to the border with Northern Ireland, Dundalk is the county town of Louth, the so-called "land of legends". It's located close to the beautiful Carlingford Lough, where water-based activities include great angling and sailing as well as more extreme sports such as kitesurfing. Land-lovers, meanwhile, will find plenty to do - golfing, riding, cycling or, perhaps, mountaineering - in the spectacular countryside of the Cooley Peninsula, although the less athletic may prefer to have a flutter on the horses or greyhounds at Dundalk Stadium. Sightseers will be endlessly busy, with some of the most popular destinations including the County Museum, Burns Cottage (the home of Scottish poet Robert's sister Agnes), the sensory garden of St Leonard's and, about ten minutes' drive away, Knockabbey Castle and Gardens.
