Ardmore is a delightful seaside village situated in the west of
Waterford, close to the county border with Cork. Looking out over the
long sandy beaches fringing beautiful Ardmore Bay, the village is
said to be the oldest Christian settlement in Ireland, having been
converted in the 5th Century by St Declan (pre-dating St Patrick). St
Declan dominates the historic sights, monuments and place names in
Ardmore. He is commemorated every summer with Pattern Day, held on
July 24, and is reputed to be buried within St Declan's Oratory, an
8th Century building. This is located on a hill above Ardmore,
alongside a wonderfully preserved 12th Century round tower and the
ruins of the 13th Century St Declan's church. St Declan's well,
hermitage and stone are also much visited. Other attractions in
Ardmore include a small castle standing on the cliffs above the wreck
of a ship called Samson, which smashed into land in 1987, an
abandoned coastguard station and a World War II look-out post. There
are some spectacular beach and cliff walks to be enjoyed along the
coast from Ardmore, while anglers are welcome to take boat trips into
the bay for a spot of sea fishing.
