Combe Down is a village that sits on the outer edges of the World Heritage Site of the City of Bath in Somerset, home to nearly five and a half thousand people. It's only a mile and a half from the city centre of Bath, and lies adjacent to the Cotswolds, and the valley of the River Avon. It's intriguing history from the Romans, to the 17th Miners have left a legacy today which sees a massive project to infill the Combe Down Mines, once used to quarry the creamy, golden hued stone known locally as Bath Stone which adorns the elegant Georgian Crescents of Bath, and even Buckingham Palace. The houses are an eclectic mix, and shows the time line of days long since past, from the rows of cottages built specifically for the Miners in the 17th and 18th Century when Ralph Allen took over the Mines in 1694, to the elegant buildings which began to spring up in order to quench the insatiable thirst of fashionable visitors, to the later additions of houses at Foxhill. There are shops, and restaurants of course but within a mile or so a treasure chest of wonders is easily discovered without the use of a treasure map.
