Farrington Gurney is a pleasing village positioned on the edge of the picturesque Mendip Hills, in the county of Somerset, and is home to over eight hundred people. The village dates far back into history, a legacy of which still remains with the impressive church that's dedicated to St John the Baptist. The church stands in the middle of a field with its tower dominating the skyline, just as it has since Norman times. From its agricultural beginnings it thrived, with cattle farming, and also the mining of coal which played an important role in the village. The railway arrived in 1927 with the opening a Halt, where trains paused to serve the miners, who purchased their ticket in an unlikely spot. A stroll around the village will uncover attractive limestone cottages and houses, some of which date back to the 17th Century, together with a handful of shops for that every essential, and an impressive Farm Shop. There are charming B&B's and places to stay for any visitor tempted to dwell, and interesting pubs and Inns offering a warm welcome and something a little stronger. Walkers will certainly enjoy the lanes edged with ancient stone walls, and footpaths crossing scenic countryside, and yet Farrington Gurney is set just eleven miles from Bath, and only twelve miles from Bristol
