Port Charlotte is a small attractive village on Islay, one of the islands of the Inner Hebrides in the Argyll and Bute district of Scotland, Port Charlotte is situated to the north of Loch Indaal on the Rhinns of Islay.
The settlement was founded in 1828 on the site of two former clachans by Walter Campbell, the Laird of Islay, he then named it after his mother. The village was laid out with neat rows of traditional white-painted cottages designed to accommodate workers from the local Lochindaal whiskey distillery.
Surrounded by a rocky shoreline and stretches of beautiful beaches the small island village has been designated a Conservation Area, it is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base for exploring Islay and the Inner Hebridean islands. There is holiday accommodation including a hotel and a youth hostel, shops and amenities and a selection of places to eat.
Attractions include the Wildlife Information Centre, the Museum of Childhood and the Museum of Islay Life, housed in the old church, with displays of life on the island from pre-historic to recent times, archeologically finds and information on the numerous shipwrecks off the hazardous coast.
Activities include walking, fishing, nature-watching, sight-seeing and nearby climbers can enjoy the granite cliffs of The Oa peninsula.
