Wroxham is often called the capital of the Broads, and for good reason: there are probably more boats for hire here and better shopping facilities than in any of Norfolk’s other little towns and villages dedicated to the holiday trade. What we refer to as Wroxham is actually two settlements either side of the wide river Bure, these days joined by a graceful modern footbridge: on the south bank is Wroxham, the north Hoveton. In Victorian times the Roy brothers opened a shop here to cater for holidaymakers drawn by its nearby Broad, and the company dominates retail trade in the district, though there are plenty of other outlets including nearby Wroxham Barns, a renowned craft centre. The permanent population is only about 1500, but in the long season this swells several times over, with food and drink facilities to match. The Bure, marinas, and a network of creeks mean there are loads of waterfront holiday properties, many tucked quietly away. The past is not forgotten though – the lovely Stuart-period Hoveton church is a must see. Wroxham’s the place to go for boat hire, by the hour, day or week; or let someone else do the work and take one of the cruises starting there. Make things doubly easy and arrive by train – it’s on the Bittern Line between Norwich and Cromer – or take the narrow gauge Bure Valley Railway from Wroxham to Aylsham.
