| Events in Beckton
Beckton was once famous for two things: its gasworks, the largest in Europe; and its sewage treatment works - still going strong as the biggest in Britain. Happily, this once marshy and unappealing district in east London has been dramatically transformed. With millions of pounds' worth of investment from the London Docklands Development Corporation, Beckton is now held up as a textbook example of successful regeneration. Situated in the borough of Newham, which is hosting the 2012 Olympics, Beckton is primarily a residential area with a variety of supermarkets and retail parks. Gallions Reach Shopping Park, with its landmark tower, is set near some of the abandoned gasworks installations - which have cropped up in films including the 1981 Bond movie, "For Your Eyes Only" and Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket". The grassy hills known as The Beckton Alps, used briefly for a dry ski slope (opened by Diana, Princess of Wales), were formed from the gasworks' waste tip. Beckton Park, meanwhile, is enlivened by animal and bird sculptures and seats with mosaic designs. Two major attractions are Newham City Farm, whose animals include several rare breeds, and Docklands Equestrian Centre, which caters for riders of all abilities, including the disabled.
