It was once a rural hamlet situated just outside Hammersmith in west London. Now Brook Green is one of the leafy, pleasant spaces that help the built-up city streets to breathe - and despite its central location, it retains a village-like atmosphere and a sense of community greatly valued by its residents. The green itself includes play and picnic areas and tennis courts. It's surrounded by churches, pubs, restaurants, grand Victorian houses and hotels: the Brook Green Hotel, dating back to 1886, is particularly handsome. St Paul's Girls' School is housed in an exceptional Edwardian building that has replaced the old almshouses and a fine house called The Grange, home to actor Sir Henry Irving in the 1880s. The composer Gustav Holst was director of music at the Girls' School. in 1933, he immortalised this part of London with "Brook Green Suite", a composition for strings which was originally intended for his pupils in the junior orchestra. Visitors to Brook Green are able easily to travel in and out of town via Hammersmith tube station, the M4 and the M40. They are also in close proximity to all the attractions of Hammersmith, Shepherd's Bush, Olympia, Holland Park and West Kensington.
