Cricklewood is a residential north-west London suburb and a very convenient base for visitors. Situated close to the M1 and North Circular Road, it's also served by a mainline railway station and nearby underground stops. One of the most popular local attractions is the Virgin Active gym and health club in Cricklewood Lane. From here, it's only a short journey to the Brent Cross shopping centre, the Wembley Stadium complex or the acclaimed Kilburn Tricycle Theatre. It's also easy to get to the West End. During the mid-1800s, Cricklewood was an agricultural village bedevilled by muddy ground, highwaymen and bare-knuckle prize-fighting. In the next century, it turned into a thriving industrial centre with factories churning out everything from Smiths crisps to mattresses and electric clocks. However, this all fizzled out in the 1960s, with residents thereafter commuting to work in other parts of London. Briefly, Cricklewood was involved in film and TV with the establishment of the now defunct Production Village project - and the district is still fondly remembered as the setting for "The Goodies". Today, a £4 billion regeneration plan for Cricklewood, Brent Cross and West Hendon aims to transform the area with new jobs, housing and parks.
