Golders Green is a thriving residential community in north-west London, with numerous shops and restaurants that reflect the multicultural character of the area. Its busy streets belie the fact that Golders Green was a hamlet until the 1900s. It began to grow in 1907 with the opening of the local tube station and the establishment of several buildings that survive today. The Carmelite monastery was built in 1908, and the police station opened in 1913, as did the Grade II-listed Hippodrome music hall - later used as a BBC studio and concert venue before recently being abandoned. The imposing St Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church appeared in 1916. Streets of semis and a shopping centre developed around the central crossroads of Golders Green Road and Finchley Road and, today, much of the town centre is protected as a conservation area. The area's longstanding Jewish community has contributed greatly in everything from Kosher cuisine to synagogues. The Jewish cemetery is located opposite Golders Green Crematorium - probably the district's most recognisable structure. This a young part of London with a student population and lots of children, for whom the zoo and ponds in Golders Hill Park are a particular delight.
