Visitors wishing to combine an exciting London holiday with the peacefulness of a traditional English village will be delighted to discover Harefield. Situated at the outer limits of Hillingdon borough in north-west London, close to the boundaries with Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, Harefield is a rural, hilltop settlement with a historic village green and a variety of charming old buildings. The award-winning, four-acre green falls within the Harefield conservation area. Surrounded by trees, it offers large, open spaces, a children's playground and a beautiful pond, which is also an important wildlife haven. Standing tall on the green is a large model globe containing a hare. This symbolises the links between Australia, New Zealand and Harefield, whose military hospital treated injured soldiers from these faraway countries during WWI. The soldiers are commemorated on Anzac Day, one of many festivals and fairs held annually in Harefield. The village has some intriguing pubs and gift shops, and the neighbouring countryside is filled with scenic woodlands, country parks and golf courses. Serious spenders are within easy reach of Uxbridge, a major shopping centre. A slightly longer journey, by bus and tube, leads to the world-famous attractions of central London.
