Situated in a south-west pocket of central London, Knightsbridge is one of the most jaw-droppingly expensive parts of the capital. The prices of the large, elegant houses ranged round a succession of exquisite garden squares - famously the ultra-exclusive area of Eaton Square - are out of this world. Here, well-heeled residents enjoy the benefits of a secluded yet exciting environment, while visitors may equally enjoy a flutter at the luxurious Park Tower Casino and the convenience of a "corner shop" - Harrods. Other up-market department stores such as Harvey Nichols and Peter Jones, in Sloane Square, stretch out alongside designer shops such as Chanel, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik. An international business centre, Knightsbridge caters for its guests with superior hotels, boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and concert and theatre venues, and a welcome proximity to Hyde Park. The list of former residents is distinguished indeed. Leading philosophers, architects, mathematicians, philanthropists and botanists lived in the grand houses alongside politicians Stanley Baldwin and former Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, composers such as Chopin, and a galaxy of writers including Jane Austen, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Mary Shelley, PG Wodehouse and Arnold Bennett. Royally, Lord Mountbatten and Princess Diana both lived in Knightsbridge.
