St Pauls is the area surrounding Sir Christopher Wren's 17th Century Baroque masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral, which resides on Ludgate Hill on the north bank of the Thames. With its awe-inspiring dome dominating the skyline, this is one of the world's most recognisable buildings. Wren began designing the cathedral - the fourth on this site - after its predecessor burnt down in the Great Fire of London. The interior is magnificent, and the 1695 organ played by Mendelssohn is still used in services, at which visitors are welcome. Wren was buried in the crypt at St Paul's, and his epitaph, written by his son Christopher, urges: "Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you." From St Paul's, visitors may easily reach Tate Modern, another wonderful tourist attraction on the opposite side of the river, via a footbridge: the Millennium Bridge was nicknamed the "Wobbly Bridge" when it first opened in 2000 and had to be closed for two years so that engineers could stabilise it. Also in St Paul's is Middle Temple Hall, a fabulous Elizabethan hall that can be hired for functions, and the College of Arms, where heralds research family trees and decide upon entitlement to coats of arms.
