Carlton-le-Moorland lies between Newark and Lincoln in the county of Lincolnshire, close to the villages of Norton Disney, Bassingham and Brant Broughton. It is a small village with a population of only about 400 but has a long history that dates back at least to the Domesday Book of 1086. The parish church of St Mary is believed to be from the 12th or 13th century, the font being definitely 12th century and the chancel is 13th century. There have been a number of additions and renovations over the years, a handsome tower was added in the 14th century and 19th century stained glass has been fitted into Elizabethan style windows. The peaceful churchyard is entered through the magnificent Lych-Gate built in 1924 to honour those from the village that died in World War I. In the centre of the village you will find a charming 16th century inn that has retained its oak beams, charm and atmosphere. In the Middle Ages the Knights Templar and a monastic order owned much of the lands in and around the parish. Eventually most of the land was taken over by the Disney family, who had their main branch at Norton Disney. Some of the family members are buried in the churchyard at St Mary's.
