The small North Lincolnshire town of Kirton in Lindsey, with a population of about 2700, is a prime example of a country town that has grown organically from at least the Conquest. Its most notable monument is St Andrew’s Church, dating from the early Norman period, though as with the town itself much altered over the years. Perhaps more intriguing are the Baptist Church, built in 1663, and the foursquare Victorian Town Hall. Locals would say in fact that there are two towns here, Church Town around St Andrew’s, all winding streets dotted with cottages from Tudor to Georgian, and High Town around the market place, their differing elevations down to Kirton’s situation on a scarp slope. Roughly half-way between Lincoln and Scunthorpe, just a few miles from junction 4 of the M180, Kirton also offers easy access to Market Rasen for race-goers and Humberside International Airport for travellers. Though no longer the economic centre it was centuries ago Kirton in Lindsey still has all the necessary local facilities including shops and a bank, and of course pubs including the George, an early 18th century coaching inn. Foodies will find the working 1875 windmill, still grinding organic flour and baking bread, a must to visit; the historically minded will be torn between Gainsthorpe Medieval Village to the north east – just lumps and bumps now but clearly showing the old layout – and the local airfield whose 1930s buildings look like a setting from Poirot, though the gliders still using it are rather more contemporary.
