The tiny village of Foxton in Leicestershire lies close to the A6 near to the town of Market Harborough. The village is very small but is well known because of the famous Foxton Locks. Situated on the Grand Union Canal, Foxton Locks are the largest example of so-called Staircase Locks in Britain. Staircase Locks are used to cope with a steep rise or fall along the route of a canal. Foxton's staircase consists of ten locks and is a remarkable feat of 19th century engineering. Work started in 1810 and was completed in 1814, helping to make the Grand Union Canal one of Britain's most important waterways of the 19th century. The locks at Foxton take between 45 minutes and one hour to pass through, this time is made shorter than it otherwise would have been, by the use of single beams and light gates. The Grade II listed locks are a popular tourist attraction, with public houses at either end for refreshment. The area is a key site for 'gongoozlers' which is the canal equivalent of the trainspotter. Other places of interest in the area include the popular market town of Market Harborough. Here you can visit 'The Old Grammar School', which stands on wooden stilts in the town centre.
