Havant, a suburb of Portsmouth, is the town and district within Hampshire in the southeastern part of the county. Home to over 45,000, the borough’s population is over 117,000 and includes Waterlooville, called after the troops returning from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The town, severely depleted in 1760 by a fire, (only a pair of 16th and 17th century cottages forming the Old House at Home pub and parts of St Faith’s church dating back to the 13th century remain), is modern in architecture and accommodates the overspill of homes and factories of light engineering from nearby Portsmouth. Formerly Havant was famous for its parchment making due to its natural springs. The Meridian Shopping Centre and pedestrianised West Street form the town’s main shopping areas. The old town hall is now the Havant Arts Centre which houses a small theatre for amateur and professional productions and the Havant Museum is home to the famous Vokes collection of Sporting Firearms. Havant College attracts students from all over the area due to a good transport system,The A27 and the A 3 (M) adjacent, the railway station having links to London, Portsmouth and Brighton. For the sports-minded, non-league Havant-Waterlooville Football Club, Havant Rugby Club and Havant Hockey Club, National Hockey League winners, are some choices. Nearby, visit the 1,000 acre Staunton Country Park with its ornamental farm, animals, follies, walled garden and glasshouses.
