Warsash sits on the eastern bank of the river Hamble close to where the river empties into Southampton Water, on the opposite bank is the village of Hamble. The two villages are connected by a ferry, once an important link on the historic route between Portsmouth - 11 miles (17km) to the east - and Southampton - 6 miles (10km) to the west. It is still used by people travelling to work , formally a rowing boat was used now a purpose built ferry operates all year round. Modern building and other building developments have made the area south of the M27 seem like a dormitory town but the individual villages - Sarisbury, Park Gate, Locks Heath and Warsash - still maintain a strong village community spirit. The village extended from the riverbank and seashore inland for about a mile, ship-building and fishing were important especially crab, lobster and other shellfish; especially popular were the crab teas. The stony nature of the ground is ideal for growing strawberries and even up to the 1970`s there were many acres of strawberry fields and a few fields are still to be found. By the crossroads in the centre of the village is the clock tower, which was built as a water tower for Warsash House; the house was demolished just before the Second World War. Warsash is home to the Collage of Maritime Studies, part of Solent Southampton University which provides training for Merchant Navy Officers.
