Great Rissington lies 3 miles (5 km) south-east of Bourton-on-the-Water, on the east bank of the River Windrush. The road from Bourton to Great Barrington runs through the the village but the original village centre was close to the church and the former Manor house. The church - St.John the Baptist - is of cruciform design with a central tower rising from 13th century arches at the crossing and has a Cotswold stone roof; it was largely re-built in 1873. The village largely conforms its 17th century layout but few buildings from that period remain, there are several 18th & 19th century buildings some of which are disguised behind 20th century restoration and enlargement. In the early 20th century a few houses were built along the lane leading from the village. In 1926 eight standpipes were set up in the village to replace the centuries old wells, but by 1940 most of the houses were fitted with piped water from a local spring fed reservoir. Main water was brought to the village in 1954 and main electricity in 1957. By the 18th century there were three Inns in the village; the Swan remained until the 1920`s; the White Horse was closed by 1891. The third was the Lamb, which is still open as an Inn. Great Rissington is a delightful village full of character and commands some very fine views across the Cotswold countryside.
