Flatford is a quiet hamlet with an influential history, set in the stunning Stour valley that lies betwixt the borders of Essex and Suffolk. Why not start exploring by taking a stroll along the river bank until the mellow brick of Flatford Mill can be seen , once owned by ‘Constable’s father. This was captured perfectly, along with many locations from this pleasing area such as Willy Lott’s Cottage, which featured in ‘The Hay-Wain’. Take a look at Flatford Bridge and the 16th Century Bridge Cottage which proudly showcases the Constable Exhibition.
Maybe the chance to take a boat trip on the River Stour will tempt, or captain your own rowing boat and meander through water meadows, with graceful swans that glide through sunlit sparkling water. Nearby East Bergholt the birth place of Constable, has an impressive church, or perhaps the grand towers at Mistley will tempt all Robert Adam fans to take a peek, for smaller visitors Go Bananas puts smiles back on faces, and if the promise of a vineyard tour and a glass or two sounds appealing Carters Vineyard makes it possible. So if visiting, don’t forget camera, spare paint brush, and an extra few days as most visitors won’t wish to leave.
