Barnstaple on the river Taw is the largest town in North Devon, North of Dartmoor and West of Exmoor and close to some pleasant beaches at Saunton and Woolacombe. Barnstaple is a thriving market town which once was an important port town, especially among American traders. Two of its oldest features are a Norman mound and fragments of a Norman castle wall. Other points of interest include Queen Anne’s Walk and a 13th Century Long Bridge. From Barnstaple visitors can explore Tarka country and join the 180 mile Tarka Trail. Walk or cycle along the Trail or take a railway trip along the picturesque Tarka Line. Stay outdoors and enjoy this glorious and beautiful part of England with a visit to the nearby Exmoor National Park with its wonderful scenery and pleasurable walks. If you prefer to let the train take the strain and relive the nostalgic days of steam, the Exmoor Steam Railway runs from Bratton Fleming which isn’t far from Barnstaple. Many excellent places to eat, drink and stay, including Bampfield Farm Holidays. A working organic farm with cottages to let which encourages its guests to get involved with farm activities and enjoy a fascinating wildlife nature trail.
