In the County of Warwickshire around six miles from Stratford on Avon is the quaint and picturesque village of Bidford on Avon lying adjacent to the River Avon with its stone bridge spanning the river. Originally this was a place convenient for crossing the river, then as the village grew around this ancient ford a stone bridge was built. The bridge dates from the early 15th century and because of its width it has always been an important crossing point. Whilst there has for some considerable time been a bridge present here it was at one time demolished by King Charles I to cover his retreat from Worcester to Oxford. The bridge was however rebuilt in the 1650’s again using stone from the Alcester Priory. Today the bridge stands proud on its eight arches and from certain angles underlines the beauty of St Laurence’s Church which itself is some 800 years old. Like many villages in this part of the country Bidford on Avon is a joy to wander around, its architecture provides a delight at every turn with its half timber framed buildings and cottages to the twisting and narrow streets. With many of the buildings dating from the 17th century and the Falcon Inn said to date from the 16th century Bidford on Avon is a place that given the chance should be visited and enjoyed
