Littleport is an ancient village set on the banks of the River Ouse, in the County of Cambridgeshire, and his home to just over seven thousand people. This historical village is positoned 6 miles from the cathedral city of Ely and is surrounded by flat Fenland countryside with far reaching views. It dates back to Saxon times, and from its rich agricultural heritage of the dark Fenland soil grew a revolution in 1816, when men returned from the bloody battles fought during the Napoleonic Wars to a shortage of jobs and reduction of pay. This caused hunger and hardship which fuelled the men to riot, which, for a few, ended in the execution of the riot leaders, and for some, transportation to Australia. Today's visitor will uncover a different story with an interesting mix of shops to browse along the High Street, and an array of restaurants, pubs and a colourful weekly market. There is an eclectic mix of architecture from across the ages together with many new houses. There is a chance to take pleasing walks in the surrounding countryside which will uncover a mix of wildlife, whilst a stroll along the banks of the River Ouse will delight artists.
