Known for its motorway services near junction 14 on the M1, Newport Pagnell is an historic northeast Buckinghamshire market town, not far from the large and lively Milton Keynes. The town dates back to the Roman era and its proximity to the River Ouse (now offering delightful riverside walks) has meant prominence throughout history, including fortification during the civil war. These remains can still be seen on the town's 185acre common, Bury Field. Newport Pagnell is the only place in England where parchment is still made; having previously been the centre of the lace trade, and the Doomsday Book is currently bound in vellum (calf’s skin) parchment. Aston Martin super-cars were produced here too, until 2007. There is the world’s oldest iron bridge in use by motorised traffic here, Tickford Bridge, built in 1810. The cobbled streets are home to a quirky house called The Kiosk, thought to be from the 17th century and the town is dominated by St Peter & St Pauls parish church. The town was also central to the coaching trade and so still has numerous pubs, some of which were originally coaching inns, including the 15th century The Swan Revived Hotel. Much other accommodation is available - Linford House B&B, Harben House Hotel and Conference Centre, a Mariott hotel, a Welcome Lodge and Lovat Meadow Caravan Park. There is a huge selection of eateries, restaurants from every continent, cafes and take-aways too. .
