Lying to the west of Birmingham in the West Midlands the town of Halesowen is close to the border with Shropshire and is easily accessed from the M5. Today Halesowen is part of the Dudley Borough of the West Midlands Metropolitan Area, but this has not always been the case as previously it could have been in Shropshire or Warwickshire such is its proximity to these borders. Dating back to Saxon times the first recording of the town name is in the Domesday Book where it is referred to as Hala or Halas until it was gifted by King Henry II to the Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen corrupted to the Halesowen we know today. Today its proximity to the motorway means that it is an increasingly popular location for large organisations and commuters, there is easy access to Birmingham and the Black Country as well as the national motorway network. Halesowen is predominantly a suburban town with a long history some parts of the town display Victorian and Edwardian architecture and yet most of the housing in the town is relatively new having been built in the last 30 to 40 years.
