The small North Yorkshire town of Boroughbridge, a few miles north of Knaresborough, is these days bypassed by the Great North Road, or in modern terms the A1(M), but it was for centuries a great coaching town on the route between London and Edinburgh. The River Ure is generally easily fordable at this point, and so the town is a natural crossing point of the river, but there was a timber bridge from Norman times to ensure the trade and communications route stayed open when the river fed by the hills of Wensleydale was in full spate. The town was actually constructed around the bridge in the early 12th century, to serve those making the crossing. The timber bridge became a great stone bridge in later years, able to carry the coaches and carts in its various incarnations for many years without problems. Then in 1945 a huge steel rolling mill being towed up to Falkirk caused the bridge to give way, though the problem was quickly put right. There were at one time more than thirty pubs and inns in the place, testament to its importance as a market town (the quaint market place still stands), and as a way station. The Crown Hotel has been around since 1672 and once a great coaching inn with stabling for 100 horses is now a luxury hotel. Visitors will find that some shops in the town have happily ignored the rush to identikit high streets. The greatest monument in Boroughbridge – or more accurately just outside – is The Devils Arrows, three great stones, the largest at 22’ 6” tall bigger than the largest stone at Stonehenge, thought to date from at least 2000BC. There is much debate about the site, but what endures is that it is an impressive feat of engineering from before the invention of the wheel, and should be much better known.
