Chapelizod is a picturesque village on the outskirts of Dublin, only a few miles west of the city centre. Located on the River Liffey, Chapelizod has become popular among commuters and visitors, since they are able to enjoy a quiet, appealing base from which to take advantage of all of Dublin's benefits and attractions. St Laurence's church - a 19th Century building with a bell tower dating back to the 1300s - is a much-loved landmark in a village which has a great deal of historic and literary atmosphere. Chapelizod is the setting for James Joyce's 'Finnegan's Wake'. And that novel is said to have been informed by the ghost stories written and set in Chapelizod by author and former village resident J Sheridan Le Fanu. The locals celebrate the area's colourful past each summer at the Chapelizod Communty Festival, which stages cultural and fun events for young and old alike. Venturing only a little further afield, the beautiful Phoenix Park - one of the largest parks in Europe, with many sights and attractions, including the city's zoo - is just a short walk away. A Neolithic cromlech, or tomb, is located close to the Chapelizod entrance to the park.
