Dunning is a small ancient village near Auchterarder in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It is situated the valley of Strathearn, north of the Ochil Hills. The village has a vast amount of history. Parts of a rampart and ditches of 1st century Roman camp remain in Kincladie Wood. The medieval village was built around the church of St. Serfs 1200 by the Earl of Strathearn; the church has interesting architecture with an early medieval tall square tower with round headed two-light arched Anglo-Saxon windows. The village was mostly destroyed by the Jacobites in 1716 in revenge for the Battle of Sheriffmuir, surprisingly St. Serf’s church survived and is the centrepiece of the village. The village shops are beside the church overlooking the Tron Square. The Dunning Burn heading north to the River Earn is nearby overlooked by the Inn and a restaurant. The village green is to the east with the war memorial and the Victorian Parish church. St. Serf’s church hosts the Dupplin Cross, a 9th century carved pictish cross originally sited on a hillside near the village. Near the village stands a stone cairn with a cross, a monument to Maggie Wall, burnt as a witch in 1657.
