Inchture is a beautiful traditional Scottish village in the heart of Scotland, situated between south-east Perth and Kinross and south-west of Dundee on the northern side of the Firth of Tay. The village was once an island in the flooded Carse of Gowrie, the name is derived from the Gaelic ‘island of the tower.’ The village was rebuilt in the 19th century and is a neat red-stone estate type village with an avenue of trees, built in two stages in the 1830’s and 1860’s. The 1830s houses are all single story ranges grouped in three or four dwellings. The 1860 houses are mainly one and a half storeys with upper dormer window. There are approximately 100 original houses with another 130 being built to the eastern side of the village. At the west end of the village detached from the other 19th century buildings is a long single story range, this was the terminus of the Inchture horse-drawn tramway 1916, linking the village to the Inchture railway station 2km to the south. The village consists of The Inchture Hotel, some small shops, a primary school and the Parish Church, which is a gothic building dating from 1834 with red ashlar stone at the front and sides.
