Port of Menteith is a tranquil village in the heart of the Trossachs near Aberfoyle, Stirlingshire, Scotland. One hour from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, Port of Menteith’s rural location overlooks the beautiful Lake of Menteith with panoramic views of the surrounding Menteith hills, including Ben Lomond. Port of Menteith is situated around the Lake, part of The Lomond and Trossachs National Park. The lake contains small islands including Inchtalla with ruined castle once the home of the Earls of Menteith, and Inchmahome site of the substantial ruins of the Augustinian priory that served as refuge to Mary Queen of Scott’s in 1547, the island is heavily wooded with some rare species of trees. Historic Scotland operates seasonal ferry-trips to the island of Inchmahome. The Lake is well-stocked with trout and used for angling competitions. The loch has been used in February for curling, however, the ice must be 10 inches thick for a match to take place; other activities include Forest Walks, golf, cycling and horse-riding. The village comprises of a few houses, hotel, church, fishery and Cookery School, there are many hotels, B&B’s and campsites in the area. Major attractions nearby include Blair Drummond Safari Park, Stirling Castle and Smith Art Gallery and Museum.
