Aviemore is a resort town in the Strathspey area in the Highlands of Scotland, 27 miles south-east of Inverness, situated in the heart of the beautiful and wild Cairngorms National Park. The historic town of Aviemore has been in existence since c1600, although there are evidence of earlier settlements in the area with the Ring Cairn and Stone Circle dating back 4000 years. The Cairngorms are the largest mountain massif in Britain; the mountains were carved over 350million years ago during the last Ice Age. By 1898, with the arrival of the railway, the town became a popular tourist destination; distinguished guests included Queen Victoria and Sir Walter Scott. The lure of the magnificent Cairngorms still attracts hill-walkers, climbers, explorers and geologists. In 1960 the Cairn Gorm Ski Centre was developed at Aviemore, the first purpose built ski-resort in the Highlands, offering all year round access to ski-slopes and numerous out-door activities and enhancing the tourism industry. Aviemore offers a mix of traditional Highland hospitality and tranquillity with the opportunity for adventure. The town has a Shopping Centre and is well stocked with a variety of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and pubs. There are many hotels, guest houses, chalets, B&B’s, hostels, camping and caravan parks. Facilities include a dry ski-slope, conference centres, theatre and swimming-pool. Activities include quad-biking, go-karting, golf, snow-sports, water-sports, walking, nature-watching, mountain-biking, fishing and clay- pigeon shooting. To the east attractions include, Rothiemurchus Forest and the Glenmore Forest Park with its Reindeer Centre with herds of wild reindeer grazing in their natural habitant. The Strathspey Way, a famous foot-path, links Aviemore to Buckie on the north-east coast; there are a few famous whiskey distilleries incorporated on the route. Aviemore Railway Station lies on the Highland Main Line; also operating is the Strathspey Railway with its steam train running to the neighbouring village Boat of Garten.
