Dumbarton is a town with a long and distinguished history. It was once an economic powerhouse: sitting on the River Clyde’s northern bank, Dumbarton propped up Scotland’s glass-making and whiskey industries, and when Glasgow’s shipbuilding boom drifted downstream it got to work putting ships on the water – Scott & Linton built the Cutty Sark under the shadow of Dumbarton Rock.
Two of Scotland’s most iconic personalities visited Dumbarton Castle, both with contrasting fortunes. Wil-liam Wallace was imprisoned there by the English, his numerous exploits in the First War of Scottish Inde-pendence finally catching up with him. Mary Queen of Scots also stayed there as an infant, taking refuge be-fore a safe passage to France could be found. As the capital of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde, Dumbar-ton was home to King Ceretic. Dumbarton has seen it all. Jackie Stewart was born there, and Dumbarton FC have been booting footballs around the Scottish Football League since 1872, and despite not achieving an abundance of recent success they keep on plugging away – much like the town itself as it makes the transi-tion from industrial burgh to one of Glasgow’s many commuter towns.
Just a 30 minute drive from Glasgow, there are many attractions close at hand. The popular chips ‘n’ ice-cream seaside resort of Helensburgh is just along the road, so too is Balloch, from where Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park unveils its natural beauty. Rock climbers flock to Dumbarton Rock for its many challenging climbs, but if the thought of defying gravity is too much, the castle which nestles itself nicely into the rock has some wonderful views of the Clyde, and is a more sedate way to enjoy Dumbarton.
