Culross is a historic village in west Fife in Scotland situated seven miles west of Dunfermline overlooking the River Forth.
Culross was a religious centre from the 6th century believed to be the birthplace of St Mungo the patron saint of Glasgow where Culross Abbey, a small Cistercian monastery, was built in 1217, the monks discovered and began mining the coal in the area.
From 1575-1625 coal was mined from the unusual off-shore Moat Pit, the other main industry was salt-panning. Culross was a busy prosperous village and awarded Royal Burgh status from 1588. However, the industries slowly dried up by 1750.
In the 1930’s the National Trust for Scotland began restoring the village back to its former glory and has made Culross a major tourist attraction, the whole village is a museum of social history and an example of how a 16th/17th century Scottish royal burgh would have looked.
There are many historic landmarks through the narrow cobbled streets and wynds
including the remains of 13th century Culross Abbey, the 16th century Culross Palace restored to its original mustard/ochre render with painted ceilings and antique furniture, the Town House built in 1626; where witches were tried and The Study built in 1633 in Dutch Renaissance style.
