Oulton Broad is the most southerly of the Norfolk Broads, although somewhat confusingly it lies in Suffolk. It also gives its name to the village around it, these days running into much larger Lowestoft, but with a different feel to that town. Oulton village has a pre-war atmosphere, with its tranquil park, tea-rooms, and architecture. The life of Oulton Broad is inextricably linked with the water. The broad provides a route to the sea through a lock and Lake Lothing, and to the rest of the Broads network through Oulton Dyke and thence the River Waveney, one of the main thoroughfares of the Broads National Park. There is a yacht station on the east side of the broad, and all the facilities hire boats require. Mooring is also permitted away from the shore, if mud-weights are used. Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve to the south west of the village provides more than 100 acres of marshy habitat for flora and fauna, and has an excellent visitor centre to welcome wild-life enthusiasts. Nicholas Everitt Park abuts the broad, and offers pleasant walks by the water, generally peaceful, although when power-boat racing is held it is much less so! Oulton Broad’s greatest claim to fame is perhaps that Sir Christopher Cockerell tested his first working model of a hovercraft here in the fifties.
