Arrochar is a historic village in Argyll and Bute, Scotland situated on the north tip of Loch Long a few miles from Loch Lomond, two miles east of the village of Tarbet. Arrochar is known as the Gateway to the Cowal and the south-west of Scotland.
Arrochar was once home to clan Macfarlane noted cattle thieves and was the location of many battles between the clans and the Vikings. The battle of Tarbet Glen was fought on an isthmus of land between Arrochar and neighbouring Tarbet.
Arrochar is surrounded by lochs, mountains and valleys with spectacular scenery, and an abundance of wildlife. The village was once known for fishing and farming and profited with its herring industry. Arrochar is now a tourist resort popular with walkers, hikers and climbers, there are three hotels, holiday accommodation, shops and amenities and various places to eat.
Attractions include the Arrochar Alps with demanding hiking trails. The Highland Mountain Ben Arthur also known as the ‘Cobbler’ stands 881m tall and is popular with climbers, Ben Narnian is another well-known spot attracting rock-climbers.
There are cruises to explore Loch Lomond operating from Tarbet which also hosts yacht races and a Powerboat Grand Prix. Nearby Kennacraig operates the main ferry terminus to the Isle of Islay for the opportunity to explore the Hebrides.
