Lismore is a small island in the Highland region of Scotland; it is situated 12 miles south of Fort William and a short boat trip across from Oban in the Argyll and Bute region. The name Lismore comes from Gaelic for ‘lios-mor’ meaning ‘great garden’ and is an idyllic and tranquil island measuring 12 miles long and 1.5 miles across at the widest point. The beautiful scenery, spectacular views of the sea and rolling mountains, wild flowers and birds ensure Lismore is a popular tourist destination ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and nature-watchers. There are holiday accommodation, a circular bus service, bike hire, a shop and post office, the Gaelic Heritage Museum and café and boat-trips leaving from Port Appin to view seal colonies, marine and bird-life. Lismore dates back to the Neolithic era with the find of a stone axe-head dating c3500BC at Balnagown Croft, a well-preserved Pictish broch. There are many more historically interesting features including Bronze Age Cairns, Iron Age Duns, two 13th century castles Castle Coeffin and Achadun Castle or the Bishops Castle, Tigh Iseabal Dhaidh, a 19th century cottage and the 85 feet tall Lismore Lighthouse, built in 1833 which stands 5 miles north-west of Oban on Eilean Musdile a small island off the south-west tip of Lismore by the entrance to Loch Linnhe.
