Llantwit Major ( Llanilltud Fawr in Welsh) is a small coastal town in the Vale of Glamorgan approx 4 miles south–east of Cowbridge. Originally a Roman settlement, this was the site of St Illtud’s monastry, known, in the (5th, as a place of great scholarship and spirituality. Though no monastic remains are visible today, history is ever present within the narrow cobbled streets, with their quaint high walls and in the architecture of the medieval Town Hall. Archeologists will also find the ditches and earthworks of an Iron Age fort at nearby Colhugh beach. Beaches near Llantwit are often shingle and shale but there is a café here and the ubiquitous surf and beachgoods shop. Also close is the Fontygary caravan park with indoor pool and full range of amenities. Good B&B’s abound as does farmhouse accomodation. Be sure to visit St Donat’s Castle. Once owned by Randolph Hearst, this magnificent building is now home to Atlantic College: an international sixth form college, founded by philanthropist Kurt Hahn, whose students crew the local lifeboat. The Arts Centre hosts concerts and storytelling festivals and the local parish church, reached via a pretty woodland walk, has a very special feel to it.
