The little village of Capel Garmon, dotted with whitewashed stone cottages, is on the eastern edge of the Snowdonia National Park, just a mile or so down twisting country lanes from one of that park’s great centres, Betws-y-Coed. The settlement contrasts with that sometimes crowded spot in its peace and quiet, though. From vantage points in the hilly village– the churchyard being just one - which stands roughly 800 feet above the Vale of Conwy the mountains of Snowdonia roll away in majestic folds into the distance. Like any village worth the name it has a good pub – this one dating back about 500 years - for a pint and food, and also selling a few energy giving comestibles for the walkers who find the place to put in their packs. Capel Garmon’s main claim-to-fame, however, dates much further back than the pub: to the south of the village there is a Neolithic burial chamber which was in use maybe 4000 years ago, and is a must-see for visitors to the area. Rather more modern but still worth the detour is Thomas Telford’s Waterloo Bridge, a mere two centuries old, down in the valley.
