Arbroath is a former Royal Burgh situated on the North Sea coast 17 miles north-east of Dundee, it is the largest town in the region of Angus. Arbroath is a popular holiday resort and traditional fishing port, complete with harbour built in 1839 and picturesque seafront. Burgh status dates from 1178 when William the Lion founded the Abbey. Royal Burgh status was awarded in1599 courtesy of James VI. The ancient ruined Abbey is an early gothic church, historically known for the Declaration of Arbroath penned in 1320 by the abbot to the Pope requesting Scottish independence. Arbroath is famous for its unique form of fish curing, using traditional kilns or smoke barrels to produce cooked smoked fish, these are known as ‘Arbroath Smokies’ this cottage industry is based around the harbour. Connecting the harbour and the Abbey is the high street with a neo classical town house, other municipal buildings. There is also a supermarket and various shops, two museums, theatre, sports centre, cricket club, rugby union club, bowling clubs and a golf course. To the west there are visitor attractions along the seafront including, Kerrs Miniture Railway built in 1935 the oldest in Scotland. Summer events include an Airshow and a Seafest.
