Alloa has been the County town of Clackmannanshire in Scotland since 1822; it is situated 7 miles east of Stirling on the north bank of the River Forth. The settlement dates back to medieval times with the Alloa Tower built in 1363. The Tower is one of the largest tower houses in Scotland, it has a dungeon, a first-floor well and a collection of Mar family portraits and silver, it was restored in the 1990’s and is open to the public. During the 18th and 19th centuries Alloa developed as a port and was a major brewing centre. Other historically interesting features include, Bauchop’s House built in 1695, the neo-perpendicular Gothic style St. Mungo’s Parish Church built 1817, the 18th century Mar Inn built beside the harbour and the Town Hall built c1888. Alloa is a popular tourist destination, it has holiday accommodation, shops, fitness and leisure centre, The Speirs Centre Museum and Gallery, golf courses and created in 1714 The Lime Tree Walk leads from the town to the harbour. The scenic Gartmorn Dam Country Park and Local Nature Reserve is a popular attraction in Alloa, it centres around Scotland’s oldest man-made reservoir dating back to the 18th century, the tranquil and picturesque park offers walks, cycle tracks, nature-watching, bank and boat fishing, picnic areas and a visitor centre
