The village of North Curry lies about five miles east of Taunton, with easy access to the M5 motorway. It is a fairly large village with a population of approximately 1,625 people. Despite this, and its proximity to the M5 motorway, the village is actually tucked away quite discretely on the south-western side of the Somerset Levels. It is found amongst winding country lanes and has buildings, history and a village life that make it a fine example of the English rural village. The history of human activity in the area goes back over 6,000 years. Nomadic hunters and gatherers would visit the area, then an inlet for the sea with a series of small islands. As the water drained from the area, these were replaced by farmers who settled in the area about 6,000 years ago. Since then the Romans, the Saxons and the Normans all had settlements at North Curry. Parts of the parish church were built in the 14th century, although records show that it was built on the site of an earlier church, dating back to the 12th century. Visitors seeking refreshment might like to try The Bird in Hand or The White Hart at North Curry.
