Herm Island is the smallest of the Channel Islands that allows public access. Cars are banned on the island just like on its neighbour Sark, but unlike Sark, bicycles are also banned on Herm Island. Neolithic chamber tombs have been found on the island, showing that it has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The earliest records of inhabitation date from the sixth century and show that a monastic colony settled on the island. It remained this way for some time until the land was annexed by the Duchy of Normandy in 933 AD. This gradually led to the dwindling of the monastic population and eventually the land became hunting grounds for the governors of Guernsey. Nowadays Herm Island is a place to visit if you want a tranquil holiday in beautiful surroundings. It is a twenty minute ferry crossing from St Peter Port in Guernsey, so you can visit for just the evening, for a day out, or for longer if the fancy takes you. Herm offers accommodation of varying types including camping and self catering. The Mermaid Tavern, which used to be a fisherman's pub, is now the social centre of the island. It has a 50 seater restaurant and a top-deck area for functions.
