An archaeological dig has revealed artefacts indicating that Newton le Willows was a settlement as far back as 55 BCThe excavations took place at Castle Hill and suggest that it was constructed by the Celts as a burial mound. At one time known as Newton in Mackerfield and lies approximately midway between Liverpool and Manchester in the North West of England.
A major town it enjoyed high levels of employment in its heyday, the Vulcan Works, Parkside Colliery and Sankey Sugar to name a few were all located within easy reach of Newton. Naturally one cannot mention Newton le Willows without touching on the famous racecourse at Haydock where it has been situated for the last 250 years.
The Newton le Willows ward is within the St Helens local authority and whilst the total population (according to Government Statistics extracted from the last Census) for St Helens is in excess of 176,000 – Newton le Willows population is recorded at 1,379.
Today conveniently located adjacent to the East Lancashire Road this allows easy access to the main cities of Liverpool and Manchester and with the M6 close by the national motorway network is within easy reach. For those that prefer to travel by train the station at Newton le Willows provides a service that with connections allows a travel throughout the country.
