Jackson Bridge is a small village that manages to be on the edge of several places at once. Easily reached by road Jackson Bridge is on the A616 road between Huddersfield and Penistone, or for the more energetic is just a few miles off the Pennine Way. It lies to the side of the more famous Holmfirth, setting of the long running BBC sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. The “Summer Wine” tour takes in Jackson Bridge, as the village includes the pub whose exterior features regularly in the programme, and Clegg’s cottage behind it. The village sits just north of the Peak District National Park, with some of the most rugged and beautiful countryside to be found in England, and to the west is Saddleworth Moor, with some of the bleakest. To the east there are the gentler attractions of the Kirklees Light Railway and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and slightly further to the northwest there is the National Coal Mining Museum. Jackson Bridge itself is a small place, once a big woollen cloth producing area, and still with some surviving textile businesses, with the stone cottages that go with such a background and friendly Yorkshire pubs like the Red Lion to refresh or accommodate the visitor.
